The Barber quarter entered circulation in 1892 as part of Charles E. Barber’s redesign of the dime, quarter, and half dollar. It replaced the Liberty Seated quarter and used Barber’s Liberty portrait on the obverse with a heraldic eagle on the reverse. The type was produced through 1916 at Philadelphia and several branch mints. Its replacement, the Standing Liberty quarter, reflected the Mint’s move toward more artistic coin designs during the early twentieth century.
