Eisenhower Dollar - 40% Silver history

The 40% silver Eisenhower dollar was created as a collector counterpart to the copper-nickel clad Eisenhower dollars introduced in 1971. These silver-clad coins were struck at San Francisco and sold in special uncirculated and proof formats rather than released as ordinary circulating dollars. The original reverse honored the Apollo 11 mission, while the 1776-1976 Bicentennial issues used the Liberty Bell and Moon design. The silver collector series ended after the Bicentennial coinage.
