State and Territory Quarter history

The 50 State Quarters Program began in 1999 and issued five new reverse designs each year through 2008, honoring the states in the order they entered the Union or ratified the Constitution. The program became one of the most widely collected modern U.S. coin series. In 2009 a separate one-year program added six designs for the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories. Together, these programs helped establish the rotating-reverse format later used for America the Beautiful and other quarter series.
