1965–1970: Kennedy Half Dollar (40% Silver-Clad Composition Type) history

Rising silver prices led Congress to reduce the Kennedy half dollar to a layered composition containing 40% silver overall. The reduced-silver format ran from 1965 through 1970.

No mintmarks appeared on 1965-1967 coinage, and the 1970-D was made for Mint Sets rather than normal circulation release. The visible edge and weight help separate these halves from later copper-nickel clad pieces.
