San Francisco
The 1925 half dollar celebrated 75 years of California statehood. Sculptor Jo Mora avoided portraits and monuments: his kneeling forty-niner pans for gold on the obverse, while a muscular grizzly crosses the reverse. Together they connect the Gold Rush that transformed California with the animal already famous on the state flag—nearly three decades before the grizzly became California's official state animal.
Obverse: A prospector works his pan beneath LIBERTY, with the San Francisco mintmark near the ground line.
