The story behind this coin

Illinois used its statehood centennial to honor Abraham Lincoln with a dignified portrait adapted from Andrew O’Connor’s statue. The reverse combines the state seal with a rising sun and the centennial dates. Strong statewide interest gave the issue a much broader distribution than many later local commemoratives.
