Federal half-dollar production began with 23,464 pieces dated 1794, followed by a much larger 1795 issue. Some delivery totals may include coins struck from dies bearing an earlier date, a common complication in early Mint records.
The edge reads FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR. Robert Scot’s Flowing Hair obverse and small eagle reverse tie the denomination to the first federal silver-dollar family.
