1816–1839: Coronet Head Large Cent (Matron Head Type) history

1816–1839: Coronet Head Large Cent (Matron Head Type) followed the Classic Head cent after the 1815 production pause. Often called the Matron Head type, it developed through several portrait and lettering refinements while retaining the large copper format.

Collectors separate early and later head styles, date sizes, reverse lettering, and Newcomb die varieties. Planchet texture and original surfaces are particularly important because cleaning and corrosion can obscure the fine distinctions used for attribution.
