1916–1917: Standing Liberty Quarter (Type 1: Bare Breast, No Stars Under Reverse Eagle) history

Hermon A. MacNeil's first Standing Liberty quarter shows Liberty without the chain-mail covering and places no stars beneath the flying eagle. The design appeared in limited numbers in 1916 and continued briefly in 1917.

Type 1 attribution depends on both sides: the original Liberty figure on the obverse and the high eagle with stars confined to the sides on the reverse. Full Head detail is a strike designation, not a separate design subtype.
