Obverse: Abraham Lincoln portrait.
The Lincoln Memorial reverse replaced the wheat ears in 1959 for the sesquicentennial of Lincoln's birth. Frank Gasparro designed the new reverse, while Victor D. Brenner's portrait remained on the obverse.
This profile covers the 3.11-gram bronze subtype. Both bronze and copper-plated zinc cents were produced during 1982, so weight is the decisive composition check for that transition year.
The Memorial reverse debuted in 1959 on the 3.11-gram bronze planchet used for late wheat cents. This composition continued until copper-plated zinc planchets entered production during 1982.
Date and die varieties: The period includes 1960 Small Date and Large Date styles, the 1970-S Small Date, and the strong 1972 doubled die obverse. For 1982, date size and planchet weight must be evaluated together; a visual Large Date/Small Date call does not establish composition.
Strike diagnostics: Lincoln's hair and coat, the Memorial steps, and the fine statue between the columns show strike quality most clearly. On high-grade bronze coins, stable original color and undisturbed luster carry more weight than minor differences in central detail.
