1971–1978: Eisenhower Dollar (Large-Size, Copper-Nickel Clad Type) history

The Eisenhower dollar debuted in 1971 as a large circulating copper-nickel clad coin honoring Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Apollo 11 landing. Frank Gasparro designed both faces of the regular issue.

These circulation coins are not the 40% silver collector version and contain no silver. The reverse changed temporarily for the dual-dated Bicentennial issue, then the regular eagle-on-the-Moon design returned for 1977-1978.
