1901–1909: Indian Head Small Cent (Bronze Composition Type) history

These bronze Indian Head cents form the final chapter of James B. Longacre's design. Philadelphia struck the 1901-1907 coins, while 1908-S and 1909-S became the first small cents produced at a branch mint.

The San Francisco mintmark sits below the wreath. Original copper color, sharp feather and diamond details, and undisturbed surfaces matter when comparing examples from this closing period.
